IMDb curated/sponsored special section presale proposal
FX knew their new series premiere Snowfall, about the crack cocaine epidemic of the 80s, was going to be a big one and they had the spend to match. As such, the RFP asked for the biggest, baddest, never-been-done-est ideas.

We realized we had a unique opportunity to pitch an endemic native ad experience, and decided to lean into our strengths at IMDb: data and knowledge of TV/Movies. We worked with our editorial team to brainstorm a curated special section around the “American Hustlers” seen throughout TV and Movie history – from Michael and Vito Corleone (The Godfather), to Walter White (Breaking Bad), to Stringer Bell and Avon (The Wire), to (shocker) the cast of FX Snowfall. Using filters for location, time, type and popularity, a user could then interact with and explore the section and various titles, which would all be powered by real IMDb data.

Despite using our already existing data, we did not kid ourselves in knowing that if this exact concept sold, it would be a massive undertaking and the price of our proposal reflected that. FX did end up buying some standard media, but turns out this idea was too big, bad, and never-been-done for them to fully buy into… which is unfortunate, because holy crack cocaine batman that would have been a fun section to help design and build.
